It’s time to add a little spooky fun to the craft table. For this Halloween card, I created a whimsical nighttime scene complete with a haunted house, creepy bare trees, a flying little witch, a curious kitty, and even a friendly ghost hiding behind a Boo! Sign.
I had so much fun building this scene layer by layer and adding all those little details that make you want to stop and look around the card. From the spooky sky to the picket fence, this card is definitely more cute than creepy – with just enough Halloween magic to make it extra fun!
To create this card you will need the following items from Kat Scrappiness:
Witchy Boo Crew Coordinating Craft Dies
Kat’s Crafty Dabbers or 1/2" Stencil & Ink Soft Blending Brushes
In addition to the above, you will need the following:
Die Cutting Machine
Ink blocks or stamping platform
Cardstock: Black, white, gray (light and darker shades)
Ink pads: black, gray, yellow, red; white pigment ink pad
Alcohol markers or colored pencils
Liquid adhesive
Score board (not necessary but helpful for the fence)
Ok, after you have all the above gathered, let's make a card!
Step 1 – Background
Cut a piece of black cardstock to an A2 sized card panel (5 ½” by 4 ¼”).
Select one of the clouds stencils from the Scene Builder stencil set. Starting at the top, use either your Kat’s Crafty Dabber or blending brush and the white pigment ink and begin stenciling the clouds. I like to turn my clouds in different directions to get the look of multiple layers as opposed to one cloud straight across the card panel. Continue all the way down until about there’s a half inch left on the bottom.
At the bottom, take your brush and lightly brush across the bottom to get a foggy look.
Then, using the side of your brush, create streaks from each of the sides of the card heading towards the middle.
Step 2 – Haunted House
Die cut the base of the Mouse House Craft Dies for your house using the lighter gray cardstock and die cut the door using the darker shade of cardstock so you have an opening.
From the Haunted House Add-On Dies, die cut the roof and door from darker shade of gray cardstock and boarded windows dies with black cardstock.
Step 3 – Fire looking inserts
Take a piece of white cardstock and ink blend yellow and red onto the cardstock. Doesn’t need to be neat at all! Just go ahead and blot it down!
Take the house base craft die from Step 2 and die cut this colored panel. Save the inserts! Take the door craft die from the Mouse House Craft Dies and die cut the door from the house base you just die cut. Save the door! You can discard the left over house panel, you won’t need that anymore.
Step 4 – Trees
Die cut two trees using black cardstock and the tree that just has the branches from the Trio of Trees Craft Dies.
Step 5 – Fence
Die cut the straight fence from the All Fenced In Craft Dies.
Step 6 – Characters
Stamp, color, and die cut the characters from the Witchy Boo Crew 4x6 Stamp Set. I used the cute flying witch, jack-o-lantern, ghost, and the cat. I also used the stamp ‘Boo!’ from the set but there is also a Tick-or-Treat stamp included with the set that would also work well.
Now that you have everything ready to go, let’s put it all together!
Step 7 – Adding the fence
I wanted the fence to swing open instead of on top of the card. I laid the fence onto the card panel with the left side overhanging. I drew a light pencil line where I wanted to score the fence to make the hinge. I then scored it using a score board but you can bend it back if you don’t have a score board handy.
I then added liquid adhesive to the back of the two posts, lined up the fence with the panel to make sure it was even, bent the posts back and adhered to the panel.
Step 8 – Tree
Next, add liquid adhesive behind one of the trees, and adhere that to the front, left side of the card panel and trim off the excess.
Step 9 – Haunted House
Grab a blending brush and gray ink pad and add some shading to the house to make it look dirty. Add some ink to the roof and door as well.
Adhere the roof to the house with some liquid adhesive, gently adjusting the roof until it is lined up.
Step 10 – Add the house and detail
Add liquid adhesive behind the house and adhere that to the card panel.
Add liquid adhesive inside the windows and door opening and insert the colored inserts from Step 3.
Add the boarded windows on top of the windows using liquid adhesive. I turned mine a little just for a little more interest.
It was at this time, I felt that the house was a little too ‘clean’ so I took a black marker and added some cracked lines along the sides and by the door.
Next, add liquid adhesive behind the gray door die cut and adhere that to the front of the door but on an angle so it appears to be falling off.
Step 11 – Tree
Add liquid adhesive behind the last tree and adhere that to the right side of the card panel. Trim off any excess.
Step 12 – Cat
Open the fence and lay that down onto your work surface. Add some liquid adhesive behind the bottom of the cat and a little dab on the front by it’s tail and adhere the cat to the fence by having one of the fence posts on top of the cat and one behind.
Step 13 – Adding the rest of the characters
Add liquid adhesive behind the jack-o-lantern, ghost, and witchy and adhere the to the front of the card panel. Add liquid adhesive behind the ‘Boo!’ and adhere that to the board the ghost is holding.
Adhere the card panel to an A2 top or side folding card base and that completes the card!
**Note, I didn’t like the appearance of the fence when the fence opened as you can see the backside of the fence and the cat. To make it look more finished, I die cut another fence and mirror-stamped the cat and die cut it out and colored it similar to the one on the front. I then adhered the cat to the other at, and added liquid adhesive to the fence, lined up the new die cut fence and trimmed off the excess. It’s an additional step but I thought it was worth it. Now when you open the fence, you also have the cat facing you as well.
