Sending Christmas Love Across the Miles

Sending Christmas Love Across the Miles

Hello Crafty Friends!

There’s just something magical about sending a little piece of home during the holidays. For this Christmas card, I wanted to create a cozy, rustic design that felt like opening the doors to a warm and welcoming holiday home.  With rich red woodgrain, classic white barn doors, festive greenery, and a touch of sparkle, this card comes together with plenty of Christmas charm.  And when the doors open, the heart of the card is revealed – a sweet message sending love across the miles during the holiday season.  Because no matter how far apart we may be, a handmade card has a wonderful way of making someone feel right at home.

For this card you will need the following products from Kat Scrappiness:

Country Christmas Barn Door Craft Dies

Sentiment Shoppe Within The Fold – Merry Messages 6x6 Stamp Set

Kat's Color Studio - Premium Cardstock - Smooth Bright White 120 lb

Kat's Color Studio - Premium Cardstock - Assortment Pack (Sweet Cherry cardstock)

Kat's Color Studio - Premium Cardstock - Neutrals Multipack (Onyx)

Red gems such as – Almandine Garnet Rhinestone Mix

1/2" Stencil & Ink Soft Blending Brushes - Gold Glitter

In addition, you will need the following products:

Die Cutting machine

Score board (optional – to create the texture of wood planks)

Ink pads in colors:  dark brown, black, shades of green

Glitter cardstock in white and silver (optional – for the bow)

Low tack tape

Acetate (optional – used to help pull the doors apart)

Let’s create the card!

Step 1 – Background panels

Cut two pieces of Sweet Cherry cardstock measuring 4 ¼” by 5 ½” each.  Take one piece and place it on your score board.  Score the paper at every ¼”.

Next, take your brown ink pad and lightly brush the ink pad from top to bottom and then from bottom to top.  Do the same inking technique onto the second piece of Sweet Cherry cardstock.  Set them aside.

Step 2 – Die cutting the Barn Doors

Die cut the large, one piece barn door craft die onto a piece of white cardstock.  Cut the paper in the middle where you see the score line.

Die cut the arrow shaped craft dies with white cardstock.

Die cut the barn door hardware with onyx cardstock twice so there is enough for both doors, top and bottom.

Die cut the two woodgrain craft dies with the sweet cherry cardstock and do the same inking technique, lightly brushing dark brown ink so some of the woodgrain appears.

Using onyx cardstock, die cut the long, skinny rectangle craft die twice.

Step 3 – Assembling the Barn Doors

Add liquid adhesive behind the red woodgrain panels and adhere them to each of the white die cut panels.

Add liquid adhesive behind the arrow shaped die cuts and adhere them on top of the red panels.

Add liquid adhesive behind the door handles and adhere them onto the white panels.  I lined them up in the middle.

Next, add liquid adhesive behind the hardware die cuts and adhere them to the four corners of the white panels.

Step 4 – Slider Slats

Using the rounded rectangle craft die, die cut two slats onto the card panel that has the scored lines.

Step 5 – Acetate pulls

When I created a test piece of the barn doors, I felt that adding something behind the doors would help the recipient slide the doors more easily.  I cut two pieces of acetate about ¼” wide and about 1 ½” long.  I added double sided adhesive only to half of one side, removed the liner and added that to the back of the barn doors.  This is optional but I felt it helped.

Step 6 – Onyx Strips

Add liquid adhesive behind the two onyx strips that were die cut in Step 2 and add them to the card.

Step 7 – Sentiment

Cut a piece of white cardstock 2 ¾” by 2 7/8” and stamp your sentiment.  I used “Sending Love Across the Miles This Holiday Season” and “From Our Home to Yours” from the Sentiment Shoppe-Within the Fold – Merry Messages stamp set.  Add liquid adhesive behind the square and adhere that to the middle of the card panel.

Step 8 – Adding the barn doors

Take one barn door and line that up along one side of the sentiment and make sure to line it up top to bottom with the black strip so that the hardware looks even.  I used low tack tape to tape down the barn door to keep it in place because you will need to flip the card over.  Repeat this step with the other door.

Flip the card panel over.

Step 9 – Adding double sided foam tape

Cut a small piece of double sided foam tape four times and place them onto the back of the doors inside the slider areas.  (Some people use pennies for this step but for some reason I had no pennies on hand.)  Remove the backing from the foam tape.  Cut four small square pieces of cardstock and add them to each of the small foam tape.  Add additional double sided foam tape around the back of the card panel.  Be sure to add small foam adhesive squares alongside the cardstock squares because this will act as an additional stopping point for the barn door.

Add this to the left over piece of red cardstock from Step 1.

Step 10 – Decorating the doors

Die cut the wreath die four times with white cardstock.  Using your chosen shades of green ink pads, ink blend around the wreath.  Take two of the wreaths and adhere them together using liquid adhesive and doe the same with the other two wreaths.

Die cut the bow four times, twice with white glitter cardstock and twice with silver cardstock.  Glue them together, layering the white on top of the silver bow.  Add the bows to the wreaths.

Glue red gems around the wreaths and allow them to dry before adding them to the barn doors.

And that completes the card!

This is only one way to create a card using the versatile Country Christmas Barn Door Craft Dies.  You can use one door, both, or choose not to have them open.  Change the colors to create any kind of barn and add all kinds of decorations to really spruce them up!
