Hello crafty friends!
Get ready to flock to the tropics because today’s card is bringing all the tropical vibes! This fun birthday card features three fabulous flamingos surrounded by swaying palm trees, colorful hibiscus, and lush tropical foliage. With a little coloring, a few fun die-cut elements, and plenty of personality, this card was the perfect excuse to create my own little flamingo paradise. And of course, what better sentiment to top it all off than “Have a flamazing birthday!”
For today’s card, I’m using some products from Kat Scrappiness’s new release! This release features some feathered friends, a tropical jungle frame, his and hers birthday patterned paper, and some fun crafty sentiments. If you haven’t seen the new release yet, go check it out!
To create this card, you will need the following products from Kat Scrappiness:
Fabulous Feathered Friends 4x8 Stamp Set
Fabulous Feathered Friends Coordinating Craft Dies
Tropical Hibiscus Flowers Craft Dies
Tropical Island Getaway Craft Dies
Berry Sweet 6x6 Double Sided Premium Cardstock
Kat’s Crafty Dabbers or ½” Blending Brushes
Kat’s Color Studio Premium Cardstock in Smooth Bright White, and Kat's Color Studio Premium Cardstock in Honeycomb, Lavendar Mist, Soft Sky, Pumpkin Spice, and Kiwi Kiss
In addition to the above, you will also need the following products:
Ink pads in a shade of blue and a shade of tan/brown
Alcohol inks (or another coloring medium such as ink pads)
Die cutting machine
Paper cutter/trimmer
Silver Glitter Cardstock
Once you have everything ready to go, let’s create this fun card!
Step 1 – “Fence”
Trim about a half inch of the pattern paper from the Berry Sweet 6x6 Double Sided Premium Cardstock and set it aside. I chose the one with the colored lines.
Step 2 – Glitter strip
Cut a thin strip of glitter cardstock using your paper trimmer/cutter and set that aside.
Step 3 - Background panel
Using the Scene Builder 6x6 Stencil, insert a 4 1/8” by 5 ¼” white card panel into the wavy portion of the stencil so you can ink blend the beach. You can adjust the card panel up and down inside the stencil until you find the right position or amount of beach you want for the card panel. Once you have the spot you like, ink blend the beach using a shade of tans or browns.
Next, for the background panel, ink blend the clouds with blue ink and using the cloud portion of the stencil.
Step 4 – Hibiscus Flowers and Leaves
Die cut four of the hibiscuses from the Tropical Hibiscus Flowers Craft Dies using Kat’s Color Studio Premium Cardstock in colors Lavender Mist, Soft Sky, Pumpkin Spice. (I added a darker color of alcohol markers onto the petals for some variation.)
Die cut four of the small inserts for the flowers either in a darker shade or color in using an alcohol marker.
Then, die cut the stamen of the hibiscus flower using Honeycomb colored cardstock.
For the leaves, die cut about 8 of the leaves and 8 of the smaller leaves that are in the die set with the Kiwi Kiss Cardstock. Add some color variation to them by using alcohol markers or whichever color medium you choose in different shades of green.
Step 5 – Flamingos
Stamp the flamingo stamp and color with your choice of coloring medium. I used alcohol markers in the example. Once you have that colored in, go ahead and die cut it. (Helpful hint: take the flamingo die cut and die cut it using a dark colored cardstock; take that negative and lay that on top of your stamped image, lining it up so that the edges are evenly spaced; once that is lined up, secure them together using low tack tape; insert the die cut which will nestle inside the negative and secure the die with low tack tape as well; run that through your die cut machine and your die cut should be die cut perfectly!)
Step 6 – Palm Trees
Die cut the palm trees and coconuts twice from the Tropical Getaway Craft Dies with white cardstock and color them using your chosen coloring method. I used alcohol markers for my example. After you have colored them, adhere them together and set them aside.
Step 7 – Assembling the Card
Take the piece of pattern cardstock from Step 1 and adhere that to the bottom of the card panel, on top of the beach.
Next, adhere the thin strip of glitter cardstock from Step 2 alongside the top of the patterned paper.
Add a small dab of glue to the back center only of the hibiscus flowers and adhere them along the top of the ‘fence’, staggering them across. By only adding a small dab of glue for this step will help add the leaves in the next step.
Next, add some glue to the leaves and tuck them under the flowers. Once all the leaves are added, you can then add more glue to back of the flowers if you need to secure them better.
Take your flamingo die cut, add some glue to the back, and tuck it behind some of the leaves in the center of the panel and adhere that to the card panel.
Glue the two palm trees onto the card panel on either side and also behind the leaves.
For the sentiment, I chose to stamp this directly onto the card panel but you can stamp the sentiment onto another piece of cardstock and die cut that using the coordinating die cut that’s included with the die set.
As much as I hated to, I decided to trim off the excess palm branches on the side. You can of course leave them, but you will need a larger envelope for it to fit.
Add glue behind the panel and adhere that to an A2 sized piece of black cardstock.
And that completes the card!
I hope you enjoyed learning the process to recreate this card. Flamingos are one of my favorite animals and I was overjoyed to create a card using them.
