Hello Crafty Friends!
Sometimes the best cards are the ones that keep a little secret! At first glance, this card looks simple and understated, but open it up and—surprise!—a whole little woodland scene comes to life. With fluffy clouds, a big leafy tree, and some adorable forest friends gathered together, this card is all about creating a little moment of discovery. I had so much fun playing with the interactive design and creating a fun scene. So, let’s open it up and play in some leaves!
The card format for this card was inspired by a card created by another card creator, Jennifer McGuire. I have all the measurements and instructions on how to create the base below.
To create this adorable card, you will need the following from Kat Scrappiness:
-Build A Scene Coordinating Craft Dies
-Leaf Pile Critters 4x8 Stamp Set
-Leaf Pile Critters Coordinating Craft Dies
-Scalloped Sentiment Strips Craft Dies
-Burlap Background 6x6 Stencil
-Kat's Color Studio - Premium Cardstock - Smooth Bright White 120 lb
In addition, you will also need the following:
-Die Cutting Machine
-Coloring medium of your choice such as alcohol markers, colored pencils, etc. (I used alcohol markers)
-Blue ink pad and black ink pad
-Stamping positioner or stamping blocks
-Silver Glitter Cardstock (you can use any color cardstock instead of silver glitter cardstock)
-Paper cutter or trimmer
Ok, all the materials gathered? Let’s create the card!
Step 1 – Card base
Cut a piece of white cardstock to 8 ½” x 5 ½”. Using your blending brush and blue ink pad, lightly ink blend starting at the top, working your way down until you like the different color variations of light blue to darker blue to create the sky.
Score at 2 1/8” and 3” from the left side. Rotate and score again at 2 1/8” and 3”. Fold the card at the score lines to create the side flaps.
Step 2 – Mini card panel
Cut another piece of white cardstock to 3” x 11” and score at 5 ½”. Fold so you have a mini card panel. (If you already have an A2 top folding note card, just cut it at 3”.)
Ink blend the front of this mini card with the same blue ink pad and blending brush so it matches the card case. The idea is to have the panels look like one seamless scene. (This mini card panel is where you would write your inside card message.)
When you are finished ink blending, add glue to the middle section of the card base and adhere the mini card panel.
Step 3 – Side front card panels
To decorate the front of the card, I used white cardstock and the Burlap Background 6x6 Stencil and dry embossed that with white cardstock measuring 4” x 5 ½”. I then cut that piece in half so I have two pieces measuring 2” each. You can use any products that you have if you prefer not to dry emboss – background dies, stencils to color in or even die cuts. I wanted to keep it simple so the wow factor is inside when they open the panels.
Take a piece of silver glitter cardstock and cut two very thin pieces about 1/8” x 5 1/2". You can also use any cardstock for this that you prefer.
Add liquid adhesive onto the front flaps along where the two meet. Add the two strips of silver glitter cardstock.
Add liquid adhesive behind the burlap pieces and adhere them alongside the silver glitter strips. Lay something heavy on top so it can adhere and allow time to dry.
Step 4 – Die cuts
Using white cardstock, stamp and color several clouds and large tree from the Build A Scene 6x8 Stamp Set and die cut them using the coordinating craft dies.
Stamp and color two leaf piles, a few nuts, single leaves, and the little critters from the Leaf Pile Critters 4x8 Stamp Set and die cut using the coordinating craft dies. I used the fox, the squirrel and the bunny. For the bunny and the squirrel, I cut off their bottoms and inserted them into the leaf piles so it looks like they are inside playing in the leaves.
Go ahead and arrange them onto your card base and adhere them when you like their placement. Trim off any excess on the sides so the panels will close.
Step 5 – Sentiment
I used the sentiments “Hello Fall Friend” and “Jumping In To Say Hello” from the Leaf Pile Critters 4x6 Stamp Set. I used black ink and stamped them onto white cardstock. Die cut them using dies from the Scalloped Sentiment Strips Craft Dies. For the back of the “Hello Fall Friend”, I used silver glitter cardstock also.
Adhere the front sentiment in the middle of the front of the card but only one side so the card can still be opened.
Adhere the inside sentiment on top of the tree, above the fox.
And that completes the card!
I love how this card looks very simple on the front and the wow factor is inside when it is opened. It stands nicely and it fits inside an A2 sized envelope when folded.
This card format is definitely one you want to keep and make over and over again using all kinds of products for any kind of celebration.
