Hello Crafty Friends!
Before I get into today’s card details, I have two announcements.

Now for today’s card…
As we get closer to celebrating the United States 250th Birthday, I was inspired to create a card celebrating this momentous occasion. I layered stitched red and white stripes with a blue stitched rectangle filled with shimmering silver stars to create the nation’s flag. The oversized "AMERICA" sentiment makes a bold statement, while the simple "Happy Birthday!" greeting reminds us that this year, the whole country has something to celebrate. You can use this design to use as decorations anywhere around your house, office, and buffet tables for picnics.
To create this card, you will need the following products from Kat Scrappiness:
Stitched Uppercase Alphabet Craft Dies
Sentiment Shoppe – Within The Fold – Sentiment Sampler 6x6 Stamp Set
6mm Mirrored Clear Solid Star Sequins
Kat’s Color Studio Premium Cardstock: White, Sweet Cherry, Deep Sea
In addition, you will need the following products:
Die cutting machine
Vellum paper
Heat embossing tool
Anti-static powder
White embossing powder
Stamping blocks or stamping tool
Paper cutter and scissors
After gathering your supplies, let’s make a card!
Step #1 – Card Panel
Trim your white cardstock to an A2 sized card panel (4 ¼ x 5 ½ ).
Step #2 – Die Cutting the blue rectangle
Die cut the Deep Sea cardstock with the stitched rectangle die (follow the arrow in the picture below) and set it aside.
Step #3 – Die Cutting the Stripes
Die cut the Sweet Cherry and White cardstock with the A2 Stitched Strips dies. You will need 7 red strips and 6 white strips.
Step #4 – Die Cutting ‘America’
Die cut the letters from the Stitched Alphabet Uppercase craft dies to spell the word ‘America’ using the Deep Sea cardstock and set them aside.
Step #5 – Embossing the Sentiment
Take the ‘Happy Birthday’ stamp from the Sentiment Shoppe – Within The Fold – Sentiment Sampler stamp set and ink that with the clear embossing ink. Apply the white embossing powder on top of the clear ink and heat emboss that with your heat tool. Helpful hint: Use anti-static powder onto the vellum before stamping. This will eliminate any powder sticking to your vellum.
Once it’s cooled, you can trim around the embossed image using your scissors or paper trimmer.
Ok, now that you have everything ready to go – let’s assemble!
Step #6 – Adding the Strips
Starting with a red strip, apply glue to the back and adhere that to the top of your white card panel. Follow that step with the white strip and continue alternating until all the strips are adhered.
Step #7 – Adding the blue rectangle
Apply liquid adhesive to the back of the blue rectangle and adhere that to the top left corner. You can put something heavy on top like a book or paperweight to help it adhere together.
Step #8 – Adding the stars
Count 50 stars from the 6mm Mirrored Clear Solid Stars Sequins.
I laid all 50 stars onto the rectangle first to get them lined up and made sure that they all fit. I then picked up one at a time with my (pokey tool), added a small dab of liquid adhesive in the spot and placed the star back down.
Another way to try this step, is to apply a piece of Glad Press and Seal on top of the stars or some other type of low tack tape or sheet to pick them up all at once. You can then add liquid adhesive on the back of the stars and lay them back down onto the rectangle.
Step #9 – Adding America
For me, this is how I like to line up my letters. I use low tack tape to tape down a piece of cardstock to my workspace. I then use the edge of the cardstock to line up the letters. Once I have them lined up, I add a piece of low tack tape onto the letters and pick them up all at once. I added glue to the back of the letters and then applied them to the bottom of the panel.
Step #10 – Adding Happy Birthday sentiment
Add liquid adhesive behind the Happy Birthday heat embossed die cut and take your finger to smooth out the glue. Apply that to the center of the word America. Helpful hint: use a reverse tweezer such as Kat’s reverse tweezer to help center the sentiment.
Step #11 – Adhere to card base (if creating a card)
Cut a piece of white cardstock to a side folding A2 card base (8 ½ x 5 ½ piece of cardstock, scored and folded at 4 ¼) and adhere the panel to the card using liquid adhesive.
And that completes the card!
If you want to use the flag as a decoration, just trim off the bottom white space so you just have the flag left over.
